Everything Will Be Alright When this album came out in 2004 and the singles started to flush out, I didn't really give it a second listen. It didn't have any impact on me, good nor bad. Just under a year later my dad goes out and buys it, influenced by his girlfriend I think. He pushes it on me, and I don't disagree because he does have fairly good taste in music, he's taken me to all my favorite gigs. Over some weeks, he started playing it more and more. When it started on the first track I started to listen up. Hey, this wasn't all that bad. It's actually quite good. I started to question why I hadn't noticed this before. "Jenny Was A Friend of Mine" is a fairly easy going track to open the album with, perfect. It's not too upbeat or too slow and boring, it definitely encouraged me to listen further. "Mr. Brightside" is more upbeat, a light, catchy guitar riff introduces you to the opening verse "Coming out of my cage..." and the song starts to come together and open into the chorus. The lyrics of this song start to build a mood for the album. It tells the tale of passing out but seeing some guy kissing your girl, and you get the picture from the title of the song "Mr. Brightside" that a front is put up to mean everything is alright. This meaning is carried further with "Somebody Told Me", if my theory is correct. The chorus describes how a friend is now making eyes at an ex-girlfriend. An atmosphere of lies and cheating is created. Later on my personal favorite "Believe Me Natalie", shows how the possible ex-girlfriend is coming back for forgiveness, and is given one last chance. "Believe me Natalie, Listen Natalie, this is your last chance..." are the opening words for this song and the final parts are put together of this albums tale of a relationship gone wrong and patched up together again. Things are corrected by the end of the album with a closing "Everything Will Be Alright". The musical talents in this band are nothing to brag about, but they don't need to be. Put together this band sound like they were destined to be. Brandon Flowers' singing voice fits perfectly with the modern take on 80's music feel that you get from this band's style. Some tracks such as "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll" really let the album down. This track is boring, and repetitive. Not all the songs fit into my theory of what this song is about, but nevertheless are still excellent tracks. "All These Things I've Done" is an example of this. This album is great, but is let down by 1 or 2 misgivings. Rating out of 10 - 7/10 |
