[Movie]Dirty Filthy Love
Title: Dirty Filthy Love
Starring: Michael Sheen, Anastasia Griffith, Shirley Henderson Director: Adrian Shergold Review: This British made for TV movie chronicles an OCD and Tourette's sufferer, Mark Furness(Michael Sheen) as his marriage dissolves, as he enters a self-help group, and as he finds love with another patient Charlotte (Shirley Henderson, a.k.a. Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter series) In the beginning of the film Mark is staying at two of his friends' house as his wife Stevie (Anastasia Griffith) is leaving him after a few years of marriage. Mark is extremely depressed and we find out that he has taken time off of his architect job to deal with the divorce and his growing realization that something is wrong with him. The resulting stress is too much for him, especially when he returns to his work only to find out he is getting phased out. His resulting meltdown and odd behavior illustrate his growing mental demons. His friends force him to go to therapy in a OCD's version of Alcohol Anonymous. It is there that he meets other quirky people like him who have their lives damaged by their obsessions and their outbursts. It is also there that he meets a very interesting woman named Charlotte. However even though Mark is now free to pursue Charlotte, he can't help but think that if he could just get rid of his mental affliction, he could get back with Stevie and enjoy his life again. It is up to Charlotte to convince Mark that his marriage with Stevie is over and that he must learn to accept his OCD and Tourette's as it has, and always will, be a part of him. Michael Sheen turns in a wonderful performance as Mark Furness. From my experience in dealing with mental patients(my parents are pyschiatrists and I've visited their work many times) I can say that he gets the nuances and mannerisms down pat. Although each person has their own idiosyncrasy, all of them exhibit the same symptoms and it is these symptoms that Sheen uses to the film's advantage. In much of the same point, Shirley Henderson should also be commended, for her role as Shirley, another conflicted person who has the unenviable job of loving Mark and trying to win him over while convincing him that he is a good person even with his afflictions. The only thing to nit-pick in this film is the "pity-fuck" between Stevie and Michael as it was too long and pointless in a film such as this, although it didn't detract at all. Final Score: 9.5 out of 10 |
